NORDIC ROOTS HYALURONIC BOOSTER SERUM

Reviewing Nordic Roots Scent Free Hyaluronic Booster Serum by Green People

The Happy Sage purchased this product.

I do love a good serum! I always use a serum or light oil under whatever form of moisturiser I am using as I find that the right ones sink in well and give extra plumpness to the skin, locking in valuable water content if you apply them after showering or washing your face when the skin is still damp.

I recently bought the Nordic Roots Hyaluronic Booster Serum from Green People along with the Nordic Roots Truffle Night Cream. Read my review of Nordic Roots Truffle Night Cream.

There are currently another 4 items in the Nordic Roots range if you want to try them:

  • Nordic Roots Cranberry Micellar Foaming Face Wash - £20 for 150ml

  • Nordic Roots Hyaluronic Booster Serum - £30 for 28ml

  • Nordic Roots Apple Complex Moisturiser - £28 for 50ml

  • Nordic Roots Marine Facial Oil - £30 for 28ml

The serum itself comes in a glass bottle in a nice black and white box (like all the products in the range) which Green People say is made from 25% grass. It has a small glass dropper with a pump in the lid so you can dispense small amounts. It's a white serum, roughly the consistency of single cream and it is completely scent free. The bottle contains 28ml (which is an odd amount - I wonder if companies are reducing their volumes from 30ml downwards but selling at the same pice to save money ...)

This Nordic Roots Booster Serum contains one of the holy grail skincare ingredients, hyaluronic acid.

What does hyaluronic acid do for the skin?

Applying hyaluronic acid topically can help skin plump up and help it hydrate which can lessen the effects of fine lines and wrinkles. The body produces hyaluronic acid naturally and uses it in your body in places such as your joints, skin and eyes. Annoyingly, as we age we start to produce less of it, as well as less collagen and elastin, which all help the skin stay smooth, supple and tight.

If you want to really get ahead on your skincare take a look at my article What is Collagen Good for? which tells you all about the benefits of taking a collagen supplement, and what type you should take.

There are many serums and moisturisers (for both the face and body) available, but it's quite hard to know exactly how much hyaluronic acid you are getting in them. There seems to be an accepted 'rule of thumb' that you need about 2% hyaluronic acid to be effective for skin but most products don't advertise how much they use. If you are not 100% fussed about being completely natural with your products you could take a look at The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% plus B5, available from Boots at £7.90 for 30ml.

I usually just try a serum and see how my skin reacts to it and see whether I can see any obvious beneficial effects whilst using it.

How often can you apply hyaluronic acid containing products to the skin?

With Nordic Roots Hyaluronic Booster Serum it is recommended that you use it twice a day, AM and PM after cleansing. It is usual to use products containing hyaluronic acid twice a day for the best effects.

Do you apply hyaluronic acid products before or after your moisturiser?

It's important to apply a hyaluronic acid serum on freshly cleansed skin. Let is absorb and then apply a moisturiser. Hyaluronic acid can hold many times its own weight in water (the plumping effect) but what you don't want it doing is getting this water from deep within your skin and drying your skin out further. By applying a moisturiser over the top of the serum you are sealing the moisture in and giving it some moisture content to hold.

People who just use a hyaluronic serum on its own will probably find their skin getting drier - this is because the hyaluronic acid has drawn moisture from the skin which has then been lost as it has not been sealed in.

Review of Nordic Roots Hyaluronic Booster Serum

As I mentioned above, I have been using this serum with the Nordic Roots Truffle Night Cream. The serum itself sinks in quickly and it doesn't really feel like you have anything on your skin. I just wait about 30 seconds after application and then apply the Truffle Night Cream.

As a hyaluronic serum it's OK but it's definitely not the best serum I have ever used. It also contains hop flowers which are said to target pigmentation and age spots. Although I have not noticed any significant difference I think you'd have to be using it for longer than a few weeks to see any major effects on age spots and pigmentation.

Overall it's not a bad product. My skin does seem plumper when I use the Booster Serum and the Truffle Night Cream together. I tried using just the Truffle Night Cream to see how on its own and I'd say there was a better result when using the two products together - but then my skin is mature, you might manage just with a night cream if you are younger!

I don't think I'd buy this again, not because it didn't work but there are other serums out there that I feel work better for my skin and I'm not a huge fan of scent free products overall.
