If you've read my article on how to improve your hair, skin and nails by having a collagen coffee every day, then you will know that I am a massive fan of good quality collagen powder.

If you were to pick one supplement to take that could improve the quality and plumpness of your skin, help boost hair growth and increase the rate at which your nails grow, then collagen powder is the one.

There are different collagen powders available and for skin you need to go for a marine collagen (Type I collagen). You also need to make sure that it is hydrolysed, which means that it is in small enough particles to be absorbed by the body. Ideally you should also make sure that you are getting enough vitamin C as this is required for the development of collagen too. If you are fairly new to the collagen party then I recommend you read my article which explains all about the different types of collagen and how they can help the different areas of the body.

If you are in your late twenties or older, then you could possibly benefit from a collagen supplement. The older we get, the less collagen we produce and as it also forms part of our joint, tendons and connective tissues, it may also help with aches and pains and the general wear and tear that our bodies get as they get older.

Skinful Collagen Powder from Bare Biology

The latest collagen powder that I have been testing is Skinful from Bare Biology. This comes in a 300g tub and costs £35 (although you can get it for £29.75 if you join their subscription service). The instructions say you need to take about 5 - 10g of the product a day. A tablespoon measure of this product provides 5g of Type I marine collagen peptides so I have been using two tablespoons of this product in my collagen coffee each morning. (I use a set of John Lewis stainless steel professional nesting measuring spoons for my measurements).

This 300g tub of marine collagen powder will last you 2 months if you use 5g a day or a month if you use 10g a day like me. Bare Biology state on their website that they have received a lot of feedback from customers and nutritional therapists who have seen great results on just 5g (1 tablespoon measure) a day but I think this will probably depend on how old you are and the state of your current diet and health. However I may well experiment dropping my 10g to 5g to see if there is any difference.

The powder itself is white, very fine and it blends in really well, there have never been and lumps or unmixed powder in my coffee and it does not taste of anything at all. No whiff of fish!

The wild cod that is used in the preparation of the collagen powder is sustainably sourced from wild codfish skin from the North Atlantic and is MSC certified. MSC is the Marine Stewardship Council who certify the fish supply of the collagen that this product is made of and you can read more on how the Marine Stewardship Council certify seafood as sustainable here.

Bare Biology Skinful collagen powder is GMO and gluten free and is also halal. It is made in Norway.

Skinful pure marine collagen is hydrolysed and therefore not damaged by heat so it can be added to hot drinks or foods or used in baking with no damage to the product. Be careful about buying marine collagen that is not hydrolysed as larger collagen molecules can be damaged by heat.

Fortunately, collagen is a low carb, high protein product and can be used on keto diets and it is also paleo friendly. Each tablespoon measure (5g) contains 19 kcl.

Bare Biology Skinful Pure Marine Collagen - Review

I have taken this product every day for a month in my collagen coffee and it is extremely easy to use and mix, I'm very happy with where it is sourced from and the ethics of the company that sell it. Personally, I think that you need to take marine collagen powder for about 3 months to see the full effects (I have been taking for a few years now) however you can start to see results in four weeks, and the older you are, usually the quicker so can see the results.

It performs well as a collagen powder and I'd happily use it again. However at £35 for a 300g tub it is quite expensive (although extremely good quality). It is available direct from Bare Biology and you can also buy it on Amazon. You can also buy the same product with added vitamin C (which is essential for the formation of collagen) for £45).

Skinful is a good product however I think that it is quite expensive. If you are looking for something a little cheaper but just as good then take a look at my review of Miracle Greens wild caught Marine Collagen Powder.
